LANSING, November 17. Nordic Electric, L.L.C. has moved
a step closer to supplying electric service in Monroe, Michigan.
Nordic has been granted a certificate of public convenience and
necessity to serve direct access customers in Monroe, Michigan,
the Michigan Public Service Commission announced today. Under
a settlement agreement approved by the MPSC on November 16, 1999,
the Commission granted Nordic a certificate to provide
competitive electric services in Monroe. Nordic will not own
or operate any transmission or distribution lines or facilities
for delivering electricity. Instead, the company will supply
the power that will be delivered over Detroit Edison Company's
transmission and distribution systems under terms of a customer
choice initiative approved by the Commission.
Nordic has previously received a certificate of public
convenience and necessity to serve direct access customers in
specified municipalities in both Detroit Edison's and Consumers
Energy Company's service territories. Today's order amends the
certificate to include customers in Monroe.
Nordic filed an application to provide service in Monroe on
October 6, 1999. Included in the filing were: 1) confirmation
that Nordic is an electric power marketer as authorized by the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission; 2) a franchise granted by
Monroe governmental officials; and 3) a signed contract for the
sale of electricity to Northstar Steel Company. The
Northstar/Nordic contract was also approved by the Commission.
Nordic, headquartered in Ann Arbor, is an electric power
marketer. It currently supplies electricity to a number of
industrial customers in Ann Arbor.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Consumer and
Industry Services.
