LANSING, May 3. The Michigan Public Service Commission today
granted The Detroit Edison Company authority to collect $8,617,236, plus
interest, from its electric customers through a surcharge on customers' June 2000
electric bills. The Commission approved the surcharge because Detroit Edison
undercollected from its electric customers for its power supply costs between
January 1 and December 31, 1998. Today's order balances actual, allowable
power supply costs with revenues collected from Detroit Edison's electric
customers during 1998.

Detroit Edison residential customers using 500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of
electricity per month will see a one-time surcharge of about $1.79 on their June
2000 electric bills. Individual customer surcharges will vary, however, based on
actual customer electric use. Commercial and industrial customers will also see
a one-time surcharge on their June 2000 electric bills, based on actual electric
use.

MPSC staff, Detroit Edison, Attorney General Jennifer Granholm, the
Association of Businesses Advocating Tariff Equity and the Residential
Ratepayers Consortium participated in the proceeding.

Detroit Edison, headquartered in Detroit, provides electric service to
about 2.1 million Michigan customers.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Consumer and Industry
Services.
