LANSING, August 16. The Michigan Public Service Commission
today fined AT-N Corporation $20,000 for violations of the Michigan
Telecommunications Act, and awarded $10,000 of the fine to a complainant.
The remaining $10,000 shall be payable to the State of Michigan. The
Commission also directed the company to make restitution to the complainant
of $1,226.38. AT-N is directed to make payment and restitution within 30
days. The Commission assessed 50% of the fine to the complainant as a
result of having his long distance telephone service slammed, in violation of
the MTA. Slamming refers to the unauthorized switching of a telephone
customer's telephone service provider, in violation of the MTA.
The complainant filed a complaint against AT-N on April 30, 2001,
alleging that AT-N has switched his long distance telephone services without
his authorization. AT-N failed to respond to the complaint or appear at the
public hearing.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Consumer and
Industry Services.
