LANSING, October 11. The Michigan Public Service Commission today approved
a special contract between Great Lakes Energy Cooperative and Great Spring Waters of
America, Inc. Under the contract, Great Lakes is to provide electric service to Great
Springs, a bottled-water manufacturing plant in Mecosta County for a ten-year term. More
specifically, the special contract recognizes that, in light of potential changes to the electric
industry effective January 1, 2002, Great Spring may, with 90 day's written notice, terminate
the special contract with respect to power supply and select an alternate electric supplier.
The Commission found that the special contract is reasonable and in the public interest
because, among other things, of the economic development potential of the contract.
Great Lakes, headquartered in Boyne City and Newaygo, provides electric service to
about 105,000 member-customers in Allegan, Antrim, Barry, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Clare,
Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Kent, Lake, Manistee, Mason, Mecosta,
Missaukee, Montcalm, Montmorency, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, Oscoda,
Otsego, Ottawa and Wexford counties.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Consumer and Industry Services.
