LANSING, October 11. The Michigan Public Service Commission today approved
a settlement agreement and authorized the Michigan Movers and Warehousemen's
Association to increase its rates by 3.25%, effective October 12, 2001. The Commission
approved the rate increase to allow the 154-member carriers to cover their increased labor
and non-labor expenses. The increase does not include revenue enhancement for the member
carriers. The rate increase will apply to shipments of household goods outside the Detroit
commercial zone. Under today's agreement, the MMWA will not seek another change in
rates with an effective date before September 1, 2002. The MMWA filed an application on
behalf of its 154 member carriers requesting a general rate increase of 6% on July 24, 2001.
Today's order follows a Commission order issued on August 16, 2001, in which the
Commission issued a notice of hearing to investigate whether the proposed rate increase
would result in just and reasonable rates. Following a hearing, the MMWA and Commission
staff negotiated a settlement agreement.
The Michigan Movers and Warehousemen's Association represents 154 member
carriers in Michigan, who ship household goods outside the Detroit commercial zone.
The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Consumer and Industry Services.
