The Michigan Public Service Commission approves construction of new petroleum pipelines in Michigan under Act 16 of 1929. They are built and maintained in accordance with the Minimum Federal Safety Standards which are promulgated and enforced by the Office of Pipeline Safety within the US Department of Transportation. The rates and services of petroleum pipelines are determined by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C.
